On this episode of Health Care Rounds we welcome Twila Brase, President and Co-Founder of the Citizens’ Council for Health Freedom (CCHF), and author of Big Brother in the Exam Room: The Dangerous Truth About Electronic Health Records. In her experience, Twila offers an interesting perspective on HIPAA and the modern-day use of electronic health records. John and Twila share some of their professional differences on the understanding of evidence-based medicine and population health management. Twila expresses her motivated interest for freedom within health care decision-making and the patient privacy movement.

Twila Brase is President and Co-Founder of Citizens’ Council for Health Freedom (CCHF), a

national patient-centered nonprofit established 25 years ago in Minnesota to support health care choices, individualized patient care and medical and genetic privacy. She is author of the eight-time award-winning book Big Brother in the Exam Room: The Dangerous Truth About Electronic Health Records, which was published in July 2018.

Modern Healthcare named her #75 on their 2009 “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare”

list. Last year, Twila Brase was selected as one of 18 leaders to participate in the U.S.

Department of Health and Human Services Quality Summit, which met three times at the end of 2019. Their discussions will be used to provide the President of the United States with a roadmap for restructuring federal quality measurement programs.

John Marchica, CEO, Darwin Research Group

He’s a two-time health care entrepreneur, and his first company, FaxWatch, was listed twice on the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing American companies. John is the author of The Accountable Organization and has advised senior management on strategy and organizational change for more than a decade.

John did his undergraduate work in economics at Knox College, has an MBA and M.A. in public policy from the University of Chicago, and completed his Ph.D. coursework at The Dartmouth Institute. He is a faculty associate in the W.P. Carey School of Business and the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University and is an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
